Microsoft baru saja mengumumkan bahwa nanti, saat dirilis, Windows 7 akan punya enam versi, mulai dari Starter sampai Ultimate. Nama dan fungsinya mirip dengan milik Windows Vista.

Windows 7 Starter memperbolehkan sampai tiga aplikasi jalan bersamaan, mendukung Home Groups, dan menyertakan " taskbar dan JumpLists yang sudah ditingkatkan." Home Groups adalah cara sederhana untuk memungkinkan beberapa system dalam jaringan yang sama berbagi media dan file-file lain, maupun printer. Jump Lists adalah cara cepat untuk mengakses file-file yang sering dipakai.

Windows 7 Home Basic tidak membatasi jumlah aplikasi yang dijalankan bersamaan – boleh sebanyak mungkin selama konfigurasi hardware Anda memungkinkan. Home Basic juga menyertakan thumbnail previews, mendukung "ad-hoc wireless networks and Internet connection sharing," juga Windows Mobility Center (versi yang sudah ada di beberapa versi Vista). Microsoft mengatakan, versi Home Basic hanya akan tersedia di "pasar yang sedang berkembang."

Windows 7 Home Premium menyertakan Aero Glass GUI. Fitur lainnya adalah dukungan untuk format media yang lebih luas, maupun peningkatan untuk Windows Media Center dan media streaming. Fitur baru di sini adalah Play To, yang memungkinkan Windows 7 untuk secara remote mengontrol network-connected DLNA 1.5 media devices. Home Premium juga mendukung antarmuka multi-touch dan menyertakan "pengenal tulisan tangan yang lebih baik."

Windows 7 Professional mencakupkan kemampuan untuk bergabung di offline domain dengan fitur Domain Join; dan Location Aware Printing, yang otomatis memilih printer untuk lokasi cetak Anda, tergantung pada jaringan mana yang sedang terkoneksi saat itu. Versi Professional juga menyertakan "proteksi data dengan network backup and Encrypting File System yang lebih tinggi."

Windows 7 Ultimate dan Windows 7 Enterprise menyertakan fitur yang amat mirip --versi Enterprise untuk perusahaan skala lebih besar yang membeli , Software Assurance Agreement volume-license-based dari Microsoft. Kedua versi menyertakan enkripsi BitLocker untuk internal dan removable drive. Ultimate dan Enterprise juga mencakupkan fitur DirectAccess, yang memungkinkan system yang terkoneksi Internet untuk secara otomatis dan aman berhubungan dengan jaringan korporat maupun membiarkan administrator TI untuk mengelola sistem-sistem tersebut tanpa harus logon ke VPN. Fitur BranchCache memperbolehkan sistem yang ada di kantor remote untuk mengakses data yang ada d jaringan secara lebih cepat melalui caching data secara local di lokasi kantor remote. (DirectAccess dan BranchCache membutuhkan server yang menjalankan Windows Server 2008.) Windows 7 Ultimate dan Enterprise juga menyertakan AppLocker, fitur yang mengijinkan administrator TI untuk membuat kebijakan kendali yang menentukan software apa yang dapat dan tidak dapat dijalankan pada sistem pengguna atau kelompok pengguna.

Sayangnya belum ada tanggal pasti tentang Windows 7. Harganya pun belum diungkapkan, tetapi kemungkinan besar mirip dengan struktur harga Vista.
